Royce White Wins Minnesota GOP Senate Endorsement Amid Controversy

The Minnesota Republican Party has officially endorsed Royce White, a right-wing podcaster and former professional basketball player, for the U.S. Senate. White, known for his provocative and often controversial statements, secured the nomination at the state party convention over the weekend, garnering more than two-thirds of the delegates’ votes. However, the endorsement came with “reservation” from the state party.

White, 33, is set to compete in the August 13 primary against several other candidates, including a former naval intelligence officer. The victor will challenge incumbent Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar in the general election.

A Controversial Figure

White’s path to the GOP endorsement has been marked by his use of inflammatory rhetoric, particularly concerning the Jewish community. He has previously referred to himself as an “antisemite” on Twitter, alongside other controversial labels. White explained to critics that he was merely listing terms others have used to describe him.

In 2022, White defended rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, following a series of antisemitic remarks made by the artist. White suggested that Jewish people emphasize the Holocaust to deflect attention from their own “corrupt practices.” He has continued to defend Ye, asserting that accusations of antisemitism against Ye were politically motivated.

Criticism and Defense

White’s statements have drawn significant criticism, including from the organization StopAntisemitism. He has also questioned his party’s unwavering support for Israel, calling it the “lynchpin of the New World Order.” Despite these controversial views, some figures within the Jewish community have shown a willingness to engage with him. Naomi Litvin, an Israeli-American author and Trump supporter, expressed tentative support for White after an initial alarm, urging him to keep an open mind about Israel.

Political Background

Royce White’s political career has been as varied as his public statements. After a brief stint in the NBA, cut short by a generalized anxiety disorder, White became known for his activism. He led racial-justice protests following George Floyd’s murder and has spoken out against the Uyghur genocide.

White previously ran for Congress in 2022, aiming to unseat Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, but finished second in the GOP primary for his district. His political views are complex, combining elements of right-wing ideology with advocacy for social justice issues.

An Uphill Battle

Winning the Republican primary is just the first hurdle for White. Minnesota has not elected a Republican to statewide office since 2006, and the state party has recently faced financial difficulties. Nonetheless, White’s nomination marks a significant moment in the state’s political landscape.

As the August primary approaches, all eyes will be on White to see how his campaign evolves and whether he can broaden his appeal beyond his current base. The Minnesota GOP’s cautious endorsement underscores the contentious nature of his candidacy and the challenges ahead.
